Mole Removal

The best method for mole removal depends on different characteristics of the mole including size, shape, and color. With most moles (pigmented areas) we are either born with them, or they appear over time as we exose our skin to the sun.

Different Types of Moles and Their Characteristics:

  • Skin Tags are small skin growths that may have a small narrow stalk. They are usually skin colored or occasionally darker in color, and usually painless.
  • Raised Moles can be a variety of colors and run deeper than flat moles.
  • Flat Moles: any dark spot or irregularity in the skin.

Laser mole removal is a surgical procedure in which a laser light beam is used to heat cells or tissue with the intent of manipulating or bursting them. The light beam is absorbed by the pigment of the mole, which is then broken up and absorbed by the body during the healing process. Because laser mole removal seals blood vessels, there is no need for suture or stitches.

How does Laser Mole Removal work?
The Laser light energy is absorbed only by the pigment in the skin. The pigment is broken up and then "carried away" by the body and absorbed during the healing process.

How many Laser Mole Treatments are Required?
Most aging spots, sunspots and flat moles can be removed with a single treatment. Repeat treatments may be required for certain birthmarks and moles (nevi) due to the depth of pigment. Most patients receive around three laser mole removal sessions.

What Happens after Laser Mole Treatment?
Immediately after treatment, the area usually turns darker. This fades very quickly and the mole seems to "fall off" after 4-7 days. Makeup can be worn the same day and sunscreen is recommended for six weeks following treatment.
